21 Day Equity Challenge

Day 14: Higher Education

'All that you touch, you change. All that you change, changes you. The only lasting truth is change" -Octavia Butler

As a higher education institution, Molloy University recognizes its responsibility to address educational inequity affecting its students, faculty, staff, and community. Data from NYSED highlights significant racial disparities in college readiness and high school graduation rates on Long Island, leading to fewer students of color accessing higher education and being adequately prepared for college success.

Students of color who do enter college often face structural and interpersonal barriers, including microaggressions and biases, that hinder their academic achievement and sense of belonging. Colleges, including Molloy, continue to struggle with recruiting and retaining students, faculty, and staff of color, resulting in fewer role models and support systems for these students.

Despite these challenges, students of color persist and succeed. However, this does not absolve institutions like Molloy from the obligation to remove barriers and create an equitable educational environment that supports all students.
