The use or threat of violence against civilian targets for political ends, including its use by states themselves. Terrorism spreads fear more widely by appearing to operate randomly.
The somewhat narrower definition employed by the US State Department: ‘premeditated, politically motivated violence perpetrated against non-combatant targets by subnational groups or clandestine agents, usually intended to influence an audience.’
Political violence committed by those of whom one disapproves - ‘one man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter’.
